Asbestos Evaluation-Identification-Inventory

One of the fundamental components of any Asbestos Management Program is the establishment of a detailed and accurate survey or inventory of all known or suspect asbestos-containing building materials. The existing safety & health regulations further requires that such an assessment be carried out in all workplaces throughout the province wherever the presence of asbestos has been confirmed or can reasonably be suspected as being present given the age of the facility.

Such a survey incorporates the following minimum requirements:

  1. The survey shall be conducted in accordance with current regulations and guidelines;
  2. The survey and subsequent report shall be performed and compiled on a room-by-room basis;
  3. The survey shall check for and include an evaluation of all suspect or confirmed asbestos building materials (both friable and non-friable) as described under Section 1.3 of the Management Program document; and
  4. All materials found to contain 0.1% or greater asbestos shall be included in the investigation and shall be identified in the report as asbestos.

Pinchin Environmental was commissioned to evaluate/identify and create an  asbestos inventory of the division's schools.  The survey was conducted in 1996 for Assiniboine South (prior to amalgamation) and 2002/2003 for Fort Gary School Division #5 (post amalgamation). Assessment of all facilities in the Pembina Trails School Division was completed in 2003. The data collected in these surveys identifies the type, condition, location, and quantity of asbestos-containing materials in all division buildings. This data is updated on a yearly basis and becomes an essential component of the division's maintenance and operations program.
